24 Things I Couldn't Live Without As a Spoonie

Luckily in this day and age we have a lot of resources and equipment at our fingertips. As someone with a disability, there's quite a few items I need in my everyday life to help it run more smoothly. Now, I don't have unlimited funds (if only) so I don't have every product that could potentially make my life easier, but I thought I'd share a few things I couldn't live without.

  1. PJ's - Aren't pyjamas in the Spoonie handbook? I practically live in my jarmies.

  2. Medication - I don't think I need to explain this one.

  3. Powerchair - Since having a powerchair I've been out for longer and more often. I'm still in quite a lot of pain but the benefits greatly outweigh the downsides.

  4. Automatic car - I don't know what I'd do without a car. I have so many appointments at various hospitals, I travel back up north to visit my family a lot, and I quite enjoy driving. Auto makes it really easy on my shoulders too, which is always good.

  5. Hoist - My robot arm (as my nephew calls it) in the boot of my car has made my life so much easier. I can actually go out on my own, something I'd not done in years.

  6. Heat pads/hot water bottle - Joint saviours, not for this time of year as I severely overheat, but when it's cold out I'm so grateful for the warmth on my bones.

  7. Knee cushion - A funny shaped cushion that I lie with in bed so my knees don't touch and cause me agony. Great little squishy thing.

  8. Chunky grip cutlery - Since my hands are rubbish, I have wide gripped cutlery that are easier to hold, makes eating less painful, well, on my hands at least.

  9. Pen grips - Same thing as above, I use them on my makeup brushes too.

  10. Perching stool - I keep my perching stool in the bathroom so I can do my skincare routine sat down by the sink; much more comfortable.

  11. Grabber - I bloody love my grabber, if I drop something, I don't have to bend down. I even use it to load the washing machine.

  12. TENS machine - I've used a TENS for almost a year and found it really helps with certain types of pain, definitely something I couldn't live without now.

  13. Shower seat - Well, I need to shower and I can't do it standing up, so a shower seat is a massive help.

  14. Toilet frame - This is kind of self-explanatory, it helps me get up off the toilet.

  15. Splints/supports/braces - For obvious reasons.

  16. Medication organiser - My boyfriend organises my medication weekly and I can see whether I've missed a dose, depending on if I can remember what day it is, ha.

  17. Medication alarms - I set alarms on my phone to remind me to take my meds. Granted, I sometimes switch them off and don't get my tablets but most of the time I'm on it.

  18. RADAR key - If you're disabled I highly recommend a RADAR key as then you can gain access to disabled toilets.

  19. Key turner - Similar to pen grips etc, a key turner is a handle for keys to make it easier to open doors.

  20. Grab rails - I have grab rails on my front door and in my bathroom so I can pull myself up/move.

  21. Beanbag lap tray - The bean bag makes it easier to balance on my lap, I use it for eating and sometimes with my laptop on.

  22. Blankets - Especially during A/W, I need all the blankets to keep warm.

  23. Planner - This is mainly because I'm a stationery addict but also because I can't remember anything.

  24. Phone/laptop/iPad - I need to be able to connect with people be in text, whatsapp, email or Twitter.

I think that's about it. I can guarantee I'll post this list and there'll be an array of other things I use on the daily that I've completely forgotten about.

What can't you live without?

  1. Some fantastic disabled gadgets listed here! ^_^

  2. Couldn't help laughing at the medication alarms! I have them too but somehow still miss doses-how dopey can you be *haha*. Need to get me one of these radar keys it's so annoying going up to the bar and having to explain that I might look disabled but they can watch me try to climb the stairs if they want a visual. Argh! Great list. X

    1. I'm so bad at ignoring the alarm lol. Definitely get one, they're so handy x
